NORTHERN CIRCUIT 9 DAYS 8 NIGHTS

NORTHERN CIRCUIT 9 DAYS 8 NIGHTS

Northern Circuit Route **** (RECOMMENDED) The Northern Circuit route is the newest, most exciting route on Kilimanjaro. The trek follows the Lemosho trail in the beginning, approaching Kilimanjaro from the west. However, instead of following the southern traverse like all the other west approaching routes, the Northern Circuit traverses the mountain around the quiet, rarely visited northern slopes. The Northern Circuit route is a nine day climb, which is the longest route in terms of time and distance travelled. The days spent at around 13,000 feet are great for acclimatizion, resulting in the highest success rates for all routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. With a high success rate, incredible varied scenery and a very low number of visitors, the Northern Circuit route is certainly one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro.

Day 0: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will be met by a Wote Trekking and Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. A briefing will be conducted in the evening at the hotel to prepare you for the climb ahead, followed by group dinner, an opportunity for the group to get to know each other before the climb. .

Nine – days option offers an extra day for acclimatization (highly recommended).
Eight-days option available
No hut required.
Camping accommodation available at all camps.

At Gilman’s point (18,600 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

DAY 9

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft

UMBWE ROUTE 6 DAYS, 5 NIGHTS

UMBWE ROUTE 6 DAYS, 5 NIGHTS

Umbwe Route ** The Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct route. It is considered to be very difficult and is the most challenging way up Mount Kilimanjaro. Due to the quick ascent, Umbwe does not provide the necessary stages for altitude acclimatization. Although the traffic on this route is very low, the chances of success are also low. The route is offered at a minimum of six days, though seven days is recommended when attempting this route. The Umbwe route should only be attempted by those who are very strong hikers and are confident in their ability to acclimatize. However, overall, the Umbwe route is recommended and we encourage to clients who need the real challenge.

Day 0: Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will meet by a Wote Trekking and Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Evening briefing at hotel to prepare you for the climb ahead, followed by group dinner, an opportunity for the group to get to know each other before the climb.

No hut required.
Camping accommodation available at all camps.
Day –1:

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Elevation: 1600m/5,249 ft to 2900m/9,514 ft
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
After breakfast the day starts at dawn with a 01h45 minutes drive from Moshi to Umbwe gate on arrival at the Parks gate you’re met by your guides and porters. Now Commence on a 4- 5 hour walk through the spectaculars forest to the first camp, Bivouac No.1 (2900m) with access to water. The path begins at (2100m) and generally keeps to the narrow ridge crest between the Lonzo River on the west and the Umbwe on the east. The path gains altitude quickly, and offers some spectacular views of deep gorges. Dinner and overnight at Umbwe forest cave (2,940m)..

Day -2:

Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 2900m/9,514 ft to 3900m/13,044 ft
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Heath
After breakfast walk to Bivouac No. 2 (3780m) just under the first head on view of the peak. If you are feeling strong, then you may continue to Barranco Hut (3976m). The path is fairly steep through the forest, heading along a sharp ridge, before it flattens as you approach Barranco Hut in the more land zone. Dinner and overnight at Barranco camp.

Day –3:

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3900m/13,044 ft to 4000m/13,106 ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The morning starts with scramble up the Barranco wall to an altitude of (4200m) and crosses through the south western slopes to reach the Karranga valley after 3 hours, before reaching the camp at Karanga valley below (4000m.) the path offers great views of helm glacier, Kersten and Decken glaciers that forms part of the southern ice fields. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Day-4:

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4000m/13,106 ft to 4600m/15,331 ft
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
This is the last water stop on the route; there is no water at all at Barafu hut (4600m) so you should take care and stock up your water supply. After breakfast you continue in south-easterly direction to the junction before turning north to reach Barafu hut after about hours. On a clear day the Saddle and Mawenzi can be seen to the east. Barafu hut is situated on an exposed dangerous ridge; familiarize you’re self with the terrain before dark to avoid any tragedies. You will be able to rest and acclimatize at Barafu gathering strength for the summit. As every other day the porters erect the tents and prepare dinner, while this is happening you can arrange your gear for the summit bid towards midnight, ensure that you replace your headlamp and camera batteries. Because it is so incredibly cols, it would be wise to carry your water in a thermal flask to avoid it freezing into one solid and useless icicle.

Day- 5:

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Point to Mweka camp

Elevation: 4600m/15,331 ft to 5895m/19,341 ft to 3000m/10,000 ft

Hiking Time: 11-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic
At around midnight you will head in a north-westerly direction up the south East valley toward Stella point on the crater rim. The night is very cold with the footpath rocky and steep in places. The six hour long walk to Stella point is a mental and physical challenge with a steep face just below Stella posing the ultimate challenge .Depending on weather conditions you could encounter snow and ice from below Stella point all the way to Uhuru for about one and offers views of Rebmann, Decken, Kersten and Heim Glaciers. From Uhuru peak you can also see Furtwangler glacier to the north and the Eastern Ice Fields to the northeast the time you spend on the summit is determined by weather and wind conditions, these could cause temperatures to plummet well below minus 30 degree Celsius. The walk back to Barafu Hut from the summit for short rest and collect the rest of your gear heading down to Mweka hut your final camp on the mountain can take over three hours. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Day – 6:

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3000m/10,000 ft to 1600m/5,380 ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
Early breakfast and depart for the three hour decent to the parks gate, there is a strong chance of the footpath through the forest being wet, muddy and slippery, but after constantly slipping and sliding you eventually arrive at the Parks gate where your particulars are entered in the register. The guides are issued with green certificates for climbers who reached Stella point and gold certificates for those who reached uhuru peak.

After all formalities are over, continue your descent to Mweka Gate where transport awaits to transfer you to the Hotel in Arusha where certificates are presented during dinner. The drive takes about 2hour.

End of the trek.

RONGAI ROUTE 7 DAYS, 6 NIGHTS.

RONGAI ROUTE 7 DAYS, 6 NIGHT’S.

Rongai Route *** (GOOD) The Rongai route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. Though gaining popularity amongst climbers, Rongai has low traffic. It is the preferred route for those looking for an alternative to the crowded Marangu route, for those who would like a more remote hike, and for those who are climbing during the rainy season (the north side receives less precipitation). The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, and seven days are recommended. Although the scenery is not as varied as the western routes, Rongai makes up for this by passing through true wilderness areas for days before joining the Marangu route at Kibo camp. This route descends down the Marangu route. Rongai is a moderately difficult route, and is highly recommended, especially for those with less backpacking experience.

Day 0: Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will be met by a Wote Trekking and Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Evening briefing at hotel to prepare you for the climb ahead, followed by group dinner, an opportunity for the group to get to know each other before the climb.

Seven- day option offers an extra day for acclimatization (highly recommended).
No hut required.
Camping accommodation available at all camps.
DAY 1:

Rongai Gate to Rongai Cave
Elevation: 1900m/6,398ft to 2800m/9,300ft
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
We take a ride to Marangu to complete the necessary registration formalities, before to Rongai. The climb begins from Nale Moru (6,400 ft) on a small path that winds through fields of maize and potatoes before entering a pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently through an attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, including the Colobus monkey. These monkeys are black with a long ‘cape’ of white hair and a flowing white tail. The forest begins to thin out at the edge of the moorland zone. Then, we take in the expansive views over the Kenyan plains as we arrive at our first campsite at Rongai One (8,500 ft), dinner and overnight. [3-4 hours walking]

DAY 2:

Rongai Cave to 2nd Cave to Kikelewa Cave
Elevation: 2800m/9,300ft to 3500m/11,811ft
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Health
The morning walk is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave (11,300 ft) with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern Icefields on the crater rim. After lunch, we leave the main trail and strike out and head southeast across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Our campsite is in a sheltered valley, decorated with giant senesces near Kikelewa Caves (11,800 ft). [6-7 hours walking]. Dinner and overnight at Rongai two Camp.

DAY 3:

Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn
Elevation: 3500m/11,811ft to 4300m/14,160ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
A short but steep climb is rewarded by superb all-around views and a tangible sense of wilderness. We leave vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn hut (14,200 ft), spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization. [3-4 hours walking] . Dinner and overnight at Kikelelwa Camp.

DAY 4:

Mawenzi Tarn to Mawenzi Ridge to Mawenzi Tarn
Elevation: 4300m/14,160ft to 4390m/14,400ft
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 2-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
A day to acclimatize with a walk up onto the Saddle towards Camel’s Back. Camp at Mawenzi Tarn Hut (14,200ft). [2-3 hours walking]

DAY 5:

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 4300m/14,160ft to 4700m/15,430ft
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
We cross the lunar desert of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut (15,400 ft) at the bottom of the crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for an early morning final ascent. [5-6 hours walking] . Dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut.

DAY 6:

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Point to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4700m/15,430ft to 8895m/19,341ft to 3700m/12,205ft
Distance: 22 km
Hiking Time: 10-13 hours
Habitat: Arctic
We start the final and most demanding part of the climb by torchlight around 1 a.m. We trek very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point (18,600ft). We rest here for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three-hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo Hut (15,400 ft) is surprisingly fast and, after some refreshments, we continue the descent to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight (12,200 ft). [11-15 hours walking]

DAY 7:

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3700m/12,205ft to 1800m/6,046ft

LEMOSHO ROUTE 9 DAYS, 8 NIGHTS

LEMOSHO ROUTE 9 DAYS, 8 NIGHTS

Lemosho Route **** (RECOMMENDED) The Lemosho route is one of the newer routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The route begins in the west and rather than simply intersecting Shira Plateau (like Machame), Lemosho crosses it from Shira Ridge to Shira Camp. Climbers encounter low traffic until the route joins the Machame route. Afterwards, Lemosho follows the same route through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu, known as the southern circuit. The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although eight days is ideal. Lemosho is considered the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro and grants panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. It is our favorite route because it offers a great balance of low traffic, scenic views and a high summit success rate. Thus, Lemosho comes highly recommended. Most of our clients use Lemosho.

DAY 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
Elevation: 2300m/7,742 ft to 2800m/9,498 ft
Distance: 6 km/4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest

We depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead. Upon arrival at trailhead, we begin hiking through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site.

DAY 2

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Elevation: 2800m/9,498 ft to 3500m/11,500 ft
Distance: 8 km/5 miles
Hiking Time 5-6 hours
Habitat: Heath

We continue on the trail leading out of the rain forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 Camp. Here we catch our first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.

DAY 3

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 3500m/11,500 ft to 3800m/12,500 ft
Distance: 7 km/4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Heath

We explore the Shira Plateau. It is a gentle walk east on moorland meadows towards Shira 2 Camp. The heath zone displays abundant wildflowers and unique Senecio trees.

DAY 4

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower
Elevation: 3800m/12,500 ft to 4600m/15,190 ft
Distance: 7 km/4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Lava Tower to Moir Hut
Elevation: 4600m/15,190 ft to 4100m/13,580 ft
Distance: 7 km/4 miles
Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

We continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. Then we divert from the main trail to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira Plateau is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

DAY 5

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
Elevation: 4100m/13,580 ft to 4000m/13,200 ft
Distance: 12 km/7 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

We trek out of Moir Valley with a moderately steep climb, then hike to the summit of Lent Hills before returning to the main trail. The path crosses a rock field and gently undulates before reaching Buffalo Camp. This section of the trail offers great views across the plains that lie north of Kilimanjaro and stretch out to the Kenyan/Tanzanian border.

DAY 6

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave
Elevation: 4000m/13,200 ft to 3800m/12,700 ft
Distance: 8 km/5 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Heath

As we head up Buffalo Ridge, the terrain becomes increasingly sparse. This route is rarely travelled and we will enjoy its mountain wilderness feel. We trek through remote valleys on to the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro until we arrive at Third Cave.

DAY 7

Distance: 12 km/7 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Artic

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks.

Elevation: 3000m/10,065 ft to 1600m/5,380 ft

MACHAME ROUTE 7 DAYS, 6 NIGHTS

MACHAME ROUTE 7 DAYS, 6 NIGHTS

Machame (“Whiskey”) Route *** Known as the “Whiskey” route, the Machame route is now the most popular route on the mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. The Machame route is considered a difficult route, and is better suited for more adventurous folks and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. The route begins from the south, then heads east, traversing underneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field before summiting. The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although seven days is recommended. The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. However, due to the heavy crowds, it loses some of its spendor.

Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will meet by a Wote Trekking and Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Evening briefing at hotel to prepare you for the climb ahead, followed by group dinner, an opportunity for the group to get to know each other before the climb.

No hut required.
Camping accommodation available at all camps.
DAY 1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation: 1800m/5,400ft to 2800m/9,400ft
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.

We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

DAY 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Elevation: 2800m/9,400ft to 3810m/12,500ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather, until the ridge ends. The route now turns west onto a river gorge. Time for rest, dinner, and overnight at the Shira campsite.

DAY 3

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3810m/12,500ft to 3900m/13,000ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Semi Desert
From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

DAY 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3900m/13,000ft to 4000/13,100ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

DAY 6

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.

At Stella Point (18,600ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all they way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.

From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

DAY 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Arusha.

MARANGU ROUTE 6 DAYS, 5 NIGHTS

MARANGU ROUTE 6 DAYS, 5 NIGHT’S.

Marangu (“Coca Cola”) Route ** Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Klimanjaro using the Marangu route. However, despite its immense popularity, we avoid leading climbs on the Marangu route. The route has the least scenic variety of all the routes because the ascent and descent are done on the same path and it is the most crowded route for that reason. Marangu is favored only during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred over wet ground, or for those who only have five days to climb Kilimanjaro
